Tentang wasiat Sultan, Mas Mangku memilih bungkam. Dia paling santer disebut-sebut sebagai calon pengganti Sultan. Kalaupun ada keberatan, kata sumber di keraton, pangkalnya: Mas mangku tak punya anak laki-laki.

GBPH Hadikusumo
Ketika belum bergelar pangeran, dia bernama Bandoro Raden Mas (BRM) Murtyanto.

Hadikusumo, alumnus FH UGM 1980, kini aktif memimpin Universitas Proklamasi Yogya.

Tentang pewaris takhta HB IX, Anindito tak bersedia berpendapat. Yang jelas dia ingin mewarisi sifat sultan yang dianggapnya bijaksana, “Sampai saya dewasa seperti sekarang belum pernah sekalipun saya dimarahi bapak”, tuturnya.

GBPH Hadiwinoto

Dia menjabat General Manager Sri Manganti, hotel berbintang dua milik kasultanan. Hadi juga menjabat Wakil Ketua Kadinda DIY, Anggota DPRD Tingkat I DIY, sekaligus Ketua Umum Pengurus Golkar Kodya Yogyakarta. Menikah dengan gadis asli Yogya, Ari Yuni Utari, Hadi, 40 tahun, kini mempunyai sepasang anak laki dan perempuan.

GBPH Joyokusumo

Tugas pertama belum selesai, datang tugas tambahan. Dia diminta mencari arsip tentang pranatan prosesi pernikahan para pangeran.

Several names have been mentioned as potential successors to Hamengkubuwono X. A family council will convene after the mourning period to make the decisive decision.

Long before his passing, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX had contemplated the succession of the throne and the status of the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The Sultan, for instance, summoned his four sons individually, presumably to discuss plans for appointing a crown prince by the end of the year. The four princes called were Mangkubumi, Hadikusumo, Hadiwinito, and Joyokusumo. Among them lies the potential successor to the title of Hamengkubuwono X.

Due to the absence of clear signals, the public began speculating about their profiles and others:

KGPH Mangkubumi
“He is the one who represented the family in receiving the Sultan’s remains from Minister of State for People’s Welfare, Supardjo Rustam, the government representative. He also welcomed the President and Mrs. Tien Soeharto in the palace courtyard when the head of state came to pay respects. Not surprisingly, as the eldest son, 15 years ago, Mangkubumi was appointed as the revered ‘lurah pangeran’ among his siblings.

Mangkubumi, born to the Sultan’s second wife, Kanjeng Raden Ayu (KRAy) Windyaningrum, on March 2, 1946, was given the name Herjuno Darpito by the Sultan.

When he was still a toddler, Herjuno was entrusted by the Sultan to Ki Juru Permana, now 70 years old, to be nurtured and shaped into a well-mannered child. Since then, young Herjuno was often taken to Siwo’s house, as Mangkubumi called Ki Juru, in Besuli Hamlet, Gamping District, Sleman.

Ki Juru Permana admitted to frequently undertaking spiritual practices for his foster child. Once, he immersed himself for 3 days and 3 nights in the Larangan River that cuts through Gamping. As a result, according to Ki Juru, a divine inspiration came down to give a new name to Herjuno. With the Sultan’s approval, Mangkubumi, who was 4 years old at the time, received the new name Herjuno Suryoalam.

In 1973, when Herjuno was about to be appointed as a prince, once again, Ki Juru was busy searching for a name. After conducting various ceremonies, he found a name for his foster child, Mangkubumi. Again, the Sultan agreed. At that time, Ki Juru mentioned that the Sultan advised Mas Mangku – as Mangkubumi is affectionately called – to return for further guidance to become a wise person.

Now, Mangkubumi, a graduate of the Faculty of Law at UGM, is the Chief Executive Officer of PT Punakawan, a company engaged in construction services. He has also been elected as the chairman of the Golkar Regional Board in DIY. In addition to being a member of the National Parliament and Chairman of Kadinda Yogyakarta. Married to Tati Drajat, Mangkubumi is blessed with five children, all of them girls.

Regarding the Sultan’s will, Mas Mangku chooses to remain silent. He is most frequently mentioned as a potential successor to the Sultan. Even if there are objections, according to sources in the palace, the crux of the matter is: Mas Mangku has no male heirs.

GBPH Hadikusumo
Before bearing the title of prince, he was known as Bandoro Raden Mas (BRM) Murtyanto. “I am six months younger than Kang Mas Mangku,” said the fourth son of KRAy Pintokopurnomo, the first wife of the Sultan, believed to have a significant chance of leading the sultanate.

Hadikusumo claimed to have met his father on September 5, just before the Sultan’s departure to Japan, which was then followed by a visit to America. At that time, Hadikusumo received a sudden call from the Sultan. Subsequently, Hadi flew to Jakarta and met his father on Halimun Street. “There, we talked for almost two and a half hours,” he said.

Regarding the Sultan’s will, Hadi refused to speak. “The matter of the Sultan’s successor must be discussed first with the family,” he said. “I don’t have such high aspirations,” he added.

Hadikusumo, a graduate of the Faculty of Law at UGM in 1980, is currently actively leading the Proclamation University in Yogyakarta. In addition to being the rector, he also holds leadership positions in the DIY Scout Branch and leads several companies, including a clove plantation in the Boja area, Semarang Regency.

Hadikusumo also has a weakness that could hinder his succession to his father. His marriage to Dra. Sri Hardani has not yet given him a son.

GBPH Prabukusumo
With a mustache and a somewhat thin stature, Prabukusumo, the eldest son of KRAy Hastungkoro, the third consort of the Sultan, lets his thick wavy hair grow slightly long. When he speaks, Prabu tends to be straightforward. Although his name is in the nomination, he does not show any ambition to emerge as the new Sultan. “I guarantee that Prabukusumo will not become HB X,” he casually remarked.

Prabu, born on December 22, 1952, was known as BRM Harumanto before being bestowed with the title of Prince. His hobbies include badminton and martial arts, specifically taekwondo rather than traditional martial arts like pencak silat. In addition to serving as the head of the Karang Taruna DIY, he is also entrusted with the position of Chairman of the Regional Taekwondo Management (Pengda) and concurrently serves as the Chairman of PBSI DIY.

He abandoned his final project at the Faculty of Psychology UGM in 1981 due to his busy entrepreneurial activities. “At that time, I decided to work,” he said. Nevertheless, Prabu’s actions did not provoke the Sultan’s anger.

Currently, Prabu leads a company engaged in construction and trade in Yogyakarta. Prabu is married to Roeswarini, 34 years old, and is now blessed with a son and a daughter. For him, whoever becomes HB X is not questioned, “As long as they are substantial, able to socialize with both the upper and lower classes, possess dignity, and can serve as a role model for everyone,” he calmly stated.

GBPH Pakuningrat
His name is also mentioned as a candidate for Sultan. However, Pakuningrat, the eldest son of the late KRAy Ciptomurti, the fourth wife of HB IX, appears quite composed. “Honestly, I don’t have any thoughts in that direction. What’s clear is my interest lies in the private sector, not in the government, nor in the palace,” he stated.

Pakuningrat is one of the four princes who got married in front of the Sultan’s remains. Two weeks ago, Nurita Afridiani, 26 years old, became his chosen bride. According to Rita, her husband’s demeanor is unassuming, and he dislikes displaying his royalty. “Mas Paku is just an ordinary person, never creating distance,” said this graduate of the Academy of Secretaries.

BRM Anindito was Pakuningrat’s name before receiving the title of prince. His childhood and adolescence were spent in Jakarta. A graduate of SMA IV Jakarta, Anindito, born on November 22, almost 31 years ago, continued his education in Geodesy at ITB. He dropped out in the seventh semester, “Before I got too engrossed in entrepreneurship,” he said.

Pakuningrat became a leader in two companies. At PT Aguna Krida Pratama, engaged in construction and supplier sectors, he holds the position of technical director. Then, at PT Dawuh Prabu Anom, which has a logo featuring a keris (traditional dagger) and bird wings, Pakuningrat serves as the Chief Executive Officer. PT Prabu Anom, named after its heritage keris, operates, among other things, in the printing industry.

Regarding the heir to the throne of HB IX, Anindito is not willing to express an opinion. What is clear is that he wants to inherit the wise qualities of the Sultan, whom he considers wise, “Until I matured, like now, I have never been scolded by my father,” he said.

GBPH Hadiwinoto
Known for his warmth in social interactions and friendliness towards everyone, Hadiwinoto, Mangkubumi’s younger brother, stands out. His resemblance to Mangkubumi is striking, with only darker skin. That’s Hadiwinoto, born from KRAy Windyaningrum, who is also rumored to have the potential to ascend to the throne. Last June, Sultan summoned Hadi to Jakarta. “I received a task to create drawings,” he said. Apparently, Sultan asked Hadi to choose a building in the palace area that could be renovated for residential purposes.

Rumors have it that Sultan indeed intends to relinquish his position and appoint a successor. Then the Sultan’s official residence is handed over to the new king, and HB IX himself, if in Yogyakarta, occupies the new house.

During the recent mourning period, Hadi was one of the busiest princes. Understandably, in the palace administration, he holds the position of Pengageng Tepas Wahono Sarto Kriyo, overseeing palace buildings and transportation facilities. He also doubles as Pengageng Tepas Halpitopuro, handling offerings.

Outside the palace gates, Hadi, formerly known as BRM Ibnuprastowo, is also involved in numerous activities. He serves as the General Manager of Sri Manganti, a two-star hotel owned by the sultanate. Hadi also holds the position of Vice Chairman of Kadinda DIY, a Member of the Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) Level I DIY, and simultaneously serves as the Chairman of the Golkar Organization in the City of Yogyakarta. Married to a native of Yogyakarta, Ari Yuni Utari, the 40-year-old Hadi now has a pair of sons and daughters.

GBPH Joyokusumo
Stout in stature, humorous, and with a husky voice, Joyokusumo is the youngest son of the late KRAy Windyaningrum.

His education at the Faculty of Economics, UGM, was cut short. However, his career in the business world and youth organizations has progressed smoothly. Currently, at 33 years old, Joyo leads CV Aji Buana Perkasa, heads KNPI, and Hipmi DIY, in addition to serving as the Vice Chairman of the Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) in the City of Yogyakarta.

Within the palace walls, Joyo holds the position of Pengageng Tepas Widarto, overseeing the welfare of the abdi dalem. He is also entrusted with the role of “narpo cundoko” or the Sultan’s aide. As narpo cundoko, “His duty is to accompany the father in various palace activities,” he told Hedy Lugito from Tempo.

Joyo is confident that HB IX has long been contemplating the crown prince. However, he has never been involved in discussions on that matter. Last June, along with his two older brothers, Mangkubumi and Hadiwinoto, Joyo was summoned to Jakarta. “In that meeting, I was asked to search for archives related to the coronation of the crown prince,” he stated.

While the first task remains incomplete, an additional assignment has arrived. He is now tasked with finding archives related to the procession of the princes’ wedding ceremonies. “The latter is easier to find, but until now, the archives of the coronation ceremony have not been located,” he said.
